The book, Memories and Photographs, in the project, Out of Context into Chaos:

  • Applies reassembly to photos that remind me of beneficial experiences.
  • Deals with the distinctions between memories and photographs.
  • Posits that photographs bear only a passive resemblance to a scene and do not offer any recognition of objects within the scene. In the absence of the memories of the photographer and the subsequent viewers, photographs present the randomness and chaos of our world.
  • Posits that without the selection and the composition of the photographer, the subsequent viewers see nothing in a photograph but randomness and chaos. It is difficult to imagine a photograph unaffected by the memory and the skills of a photographer, but these reassembled photographs offer just such an experience.
  • Uses reassembly to challenge the viewer to reconsider and separate resemblance and recognition.
  • Posits that resemblance offers neither recognition nor emotion. They require experience of an actor affecting the viewer.
  • Posits that without resemblance and composition, a viewer cannot easily reconstruct a scene.
  • Posits that reassembly challenges the viewer to examine their process of recognition without the aid of composition.
